Taliban fighters in Afghanistan say they have taken control of Kandahar’s second-largest city from government forces after seizing control of Herat, the country’s third-largest city.

The militants told reporters that they had already occupied Kandahar although their claims had not yet been confirmed.

The Taliban appears to be planning to take control of Kandahar before the militants move to the Afghan Capital City, Kabul.

In Herat, 3,000 Prisoners were released from prison.

The two cities are the group’s main strongholds in parts of the country where they have ousted government forces.

The group recently took over Qala-I-Naw in Badghis Province.

The United States and Britain have said they will send troops to Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, to evacuate their nationals
