Paris Saint-Germain refused to let Kylian Mbappe join Real Madrid in the 2021 summer transfer window, a decision which the Frenchman accepted even though he did ask to depart the Parc des Princes.
Throughout the entire transfer saga, Mbappe stayed in the background and remained quiet, but now he has given his version of events.
“I asked to go and, from that moment, I didn’t want to renew,” Mbappe told Jerome Rothen for RMC Sport in an interview that will be published in full on Tuesday.
“I wanted the club to accept a transfer for me so that they could receive some money and look for a quality replacement.
“I told them early enough for the club to be able to react. My hope was that we could both benefit and find a good deal.
“I didn’t like the belief that things would be done in the final week of August. I had told the club at the end of July that I wanted to go.
“My position was clear. I said I wanted to go and I said it quite early.
“But, I respect those at the club and also told them ‘If you don’t want me to go then I will stay’.”
Mbappe is happy in Paris for now
In the interview, Mbappe also insisted that he is still happy at PSG, even though he wasn’t able to depart this past summer.
“People said that I rejected six or seven offers to extend my contract or that I had stopped talking with Leonardo, but that’s not true at all,” he stated.
“I have always been happy at the club in my four years here and I still am.”
As mentioned above, the full interview will be released on Tuesday and only some excerpts have been published so far.
We can expect to hear more takes from Mbappe, then, in the very near future.
