The Rivers State Police Command has justified its recent demolition of buildings at its Miniokoro barracks in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, saying the demolished structures are shanties and lacked the requisite C of O.
Responding to the recent protests of many residents of the barracks across the streets of Port Harcourt, the spokesperson of the Command, DSP. Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement said, the move by the Force Headquarters was necessitated by the need to retrieve the properties from illegal occupants.
While noting that the decision was also based on the decision of the police management team, the DSP said: “The command is aware of the demolition exercise. Those people are illegal occupants they do not have their C of O. If they have they should come and prove that they have.
“That land belongs to the Nigeria Police and police is destroying shanties and illegal structures in the Barracks.
“The police management agreed on the action because there are some persons in the Barracks that are of questionable characters, so they decided to demolish shanties and illegal structures in the Barracks. It is internal restructuring that is going within the police,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Paramount Ruler of the Rumuobiakani community, Eze Temple Ejeku, after meeting with the DPO of the police station in his community, urged the protesting residents to allow peace reign.
